Drumming Workshops
All of the following drum workshops can be tailored and delivered
to meet particular customer needs.
Depending on what you're looking for, they can be combined or adapted
to provide a unique, fun, learning experience.
Drum Workshops can be from 3 hours to a full day to a whole weekend,
or even spread over several weeks of evenings as an adlut learning/evening
class.
Drum Workshops can also be tailored to particular age groups, for
example the key stages of the National Curriculum, youth groups, parent and
child groups, etc.
Most of the workshops can also be delivered as corporate entertainment
or as fun team building days for staff incorporating aspects of personal
development. They can also be adapted to a picnic or home setting as the
perfect family celebration. If you're bored with ten pin bowling, paintball
and gokarting, then why not try a drum workshop? You learn a lot more when
you drum than drumming - co-operation, teamwork, respect, other's ideas,
leadership, integration, diversity...
All instruments and amplification are provided. We predominantly
use djembes, congas, cajons and various shakers/cowbells.
A 60% deposit must be paid a minimum of 4 weeks before the workshop
date, of which 25% (15%) is refunded if the workshop is cancelled with in
2 weeks of the workshop date.
Our educational workshops for schools are designed to compliment
key stages 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum.
Drum Circle Workshops
A Drum Circle Workshop is possibly the best introduction to hand drumming
for people with little or no previous musical experience. They are highly
informal and fun, and designed to get everyone drumming within a matter of
minutes. The main drum used in these workshops is the djembe, an African
goblet shaped drum perfect for beginners. Combined with various shakers,
claves, congas and other bits and pieces, you will be playing together as
a group within minutes.
Drum Circle Workshops are taught orally, with nothing written down.
It's all about participating and having fun, not endless hours of theory.
Basically, if you can count to 4 and know your left hand from your right,
you can be part of a drum circle!
Legal Stuff - Terms and Conditions
Because drumming is a physically demanding activity, you will be
required to fill out a brief health questionnaire and disclaimer before the
workshop. However, provided you have no serious injuries or medical conditions,
you should be able to participate fully.

African Drum and Dance Workshops
An African Drum and Dance Workshop is the perfect introduction to
both subjects. They are highly informal and fun, and designed to get everyone
drumming and /or dancing within a matter of minutes.
Definitive up-tempo foot movement to sounds of African drums, combined
with unusual but alluring hand patterns and clapping, is an exhilarating
introduction to dance. As well as learning basic history of African dance,
students stomp and shudder to rhythms that were traditionally used for story
telling and ceremonies.
Drummers
The African drum was originally made as a form of communication. The
drum beat in Africa is heard every day for celebration and fun and in some
places it is still the main form of communication. The Djembe (an African
goblet drum) is the most popular and sought after drum in the world.
In many African cultures, women are not permitted to play certain
drums or rhythms - basically, the men drum and the women dance. However,
there is no distinction between "drummers" and "dancers" here - women are
encouraged to drum and men are encouraged to dance, provided we can peel
them away from the drums!
You are free to pick up any instrument and join in, or, if the
rhythm seduces you, to dance like nobody's watching!
Need a breather? Then feel free to sit and listen or play along on
one of the many instruments available.
I will be on hand throughout to show you how each instrument is played
and to teach you some simple yet effective rhythms. Once you've grasped the
basics, you are free to play along.
Dancers
The African dance steps are handled by an experienced dance teacher
with a wealth of knowledge on the various dances and their cultural significance.
Following a mandatory warm up, she will teach you some of the moves, while
I provide the grooves.
Group Practice
The group is usually then split into "drummers" and "dancers" - the
drummers providing the music and the dancers learning to apply the moves
to the music.
After a short practice together, you are then free to dance, to drum,
to sit out and listen as the mood takes you.
We then play some recorded music to dance and play along to, to give
you a better idea of the cultural aspects of the music and dance, and the
sheer power and excitement of 20 or more drummers in an African village
setting.

Latin Drum and Dance Workshops
Similar in structure to the African Drum and Dance Workshop, a Latin
Drum and Dance Workshop is the perfect introduction to both subjects. They
are highly informal and fun, and designed to get everyone drumming and /or
dancing within a matter of minutes.
Drawing mainly on the music and dance of Brazil and Cuba, latin
Drum and dance workshops may include Salsa, Mambo, Rumba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Reggaeton,
Bachata, Cumbia, Merengue and even some Capoeira.
Once again, you are free to drum or dance as the mood takes you.
Women are encouraged to drum and men are encouraged to dance, provided we
can peel them away from the drums!

Make and Play Percussion Workshops
This unique workshop is designed for people with little or no previous
knowledge of percussion instruments or their techniques.
Using found/recycled materials and basic hand and cordless tools,
I will guide you through the making of various improvised percussion instruments.
Once these have been inspected and agreed as safe, I will guide you through
the techniques required to play them.
Learning together in a group or "circle" setting, each person
will rotate and try each instrument, experimenting with the sounds it can
produce, before returning to the instrument they made.
We will then learn to play together in small and large groups (depending
on numbers) with me on hand to guide you.
Make and Play percussion Workshops are taught orally, with nothing
written down. It's all about participating and having fun, not endless hours
of theory. Basically, if you can count to 4 and know your left hand from
your right, you can Make and Play!
